He is, in our opinion, a superstar winemaker with the looks of an Italian intellectual.
Already famous in Italy, it cannot be long before his name is known further afield.
Based not far from Cortona, the estate is managed biodynamically and with a rigorous attention to detail. Never believe that biodynamics is in some way soft and fluffy. Stefano has researched his vineyards extensively both in regards to climate and geology, and this in turn has allowed him to identify the best clones.
Once the grapes are harvested some of them are left whole, while the remainder are gently foot pressed and manually placed into small concrete vats without the use of pumps. Fermentation is automatic, without added yeasts or sulphur. The wine is bottled without filtration or stabilization.
He makes just one wine from Syrah (using the clone Sérine). You may consider it expensive, but for what it is we consider it to be exceptional value given the prices that are being charged for top Syrah wines from the Northern Rhône, with which this wine is easily comparable.
We are currently listing two vintages. The primary difference is that there is a little oak on the 2009 whereas the 2010 has none at all.
