L’Agricola del Farneto

Based not far from Modena, an area that is famous for its vinegar, it is hardly surprising that when we met for the first time they were mostly interested in selling us their balsamic, rather than their wine…

We kept saying how good the wine was but, as with some of our other producers, we had to work hard to get them to sell it to us. We are glad our efforts paid off!

The red wine is a blend of cabernet sauvignon with the local mazermino that is a typical Emilia Romagna grape and one of Italy’s oldest (and, so the locals tell you, a firm favourite of Mozart!). Both varieties in the blend deliver wines that show at their best with some bottle age and so it is terrific to be able to list the 2009 vintage of this wine.

The sparkling Brut is made from spergola (an ancient variety going back to the fifteenth century) and sauvignon blanc. The second fermentation takes place in bottle after the addition of must and is disgorged after some eighteen months on the lees.
