Those in the know will tell you that Friuli in the northeast is home to some of the finest wines in all of Italy. It’s also a region where fantastic orange wines are being made. Orange wine? Well, in simple terms it is a white wine that is made using red wine techniques, i.e. skin maceration. The wines have more texture and tannin than standard ‘whites’ and as a result can go phenomenally well with food. But don’t think this is some fancy new technique; indeed, the origins of orange wine go back hundreds of years. Stylish reds can also be found in this region and we highly recommend Marco Sara’s single varieties, in particular the peppery Schioppettino.
