It’s sometimes hard to communicate what natural winemaking is all about, but Joel and Christine Menard describe it well when they say that their wines are like children – not without their faults, but with imperfections that make each individual what they are.
They talk passionately and genuinely about their desire to share their wines with everyone; of course, they have to make a living, but material gain really isn’t at the heart of their work, and this ethos gives their wines a special magic.
They are masters at showing nature’s work at its best. Like the best curators they understand how to show off each vintage, the different grapes, and the individual sites on which they are grown. These wines have great minerality, acidity and intensity. Remarkably good value.
Superb Loire Gamay, balanced and energetic.
Indigenous grapes to this part of the Loire, a light red dominated by white pepper aromas.
Will give most Chinon a run for their money.
Chenin Blanc expresses itself fully when attacked by noble rot, 2009 was a hot year.
Grapes are attacked by botrytis, superb balance.
