Philippe Gourdon comes from a long family tradition of wine making, yet it took him a while to come to the party – via a deviation into the world of mushroom farming. However he has not failed to make an impression, with vibrant, angular wines that you cannot fail to notice.
The decision to work as an organic and biodynamic producer came early. Philippe was strongly motivated both by the importance of delivering terroir wines, and the wish to take care of the land for future generations.
Despite being a fervent supporter of the appellation system, the Tour Grise wines no longer form part of the Saumur appellation. As is wryly noted on their website: “the more the wines express the terroir that they come from, the harder it is to get the appellation’s approval.” However, bureaucratic approval has nothing to do with knowing a great wine when you taste it.
To the uninitiated the wines can appear stern, adroit, maybe a little distant (the Jurassic limestone born Fontenelles is wonderful, but requires you to concentrate). Yet they can also be warm, inviting and mischievous (Ze Bulle Zero Pointé Rosé is an excellent case in point).
