Château Tire Pé
- Organic certified
- Biodynamic uncertified
Sixty kilometres south of Bordeaux, where ‘organic’ remains something of a dirty word, this estate is planted on the clay and limestone soils where merlot, cabernet franc and malbec vines are tended without any chemical intervention.
This malbec is unlike anything you’ll find in Cahors. It’s truly delicious, with a terrific texture and weight. It’s also AOC Bordeaux … Not everyone knows you can label a 100% malbec as Bordeaux. The Diem meanwhile is merlot without makeup, having been aged in steel, and is very charming.
What’s lovely about the estate is that everything is joyful. The wines are delicious, the philosophy is wonderful and the people are talented and have both humility and humour. You can see this by looking no further than the estate name, which is an entirely subtle reference to the mules and donkeys that historically used to carry heavy goods to the top of the steep hill. Exhausted by their pulling efforts, the animals’ journey would be regularly interrupted with bouts of flatulence, and for those with rudimentary French, ‘Tire-Pe’, won’t require too much translating!
